Family Winemakers will host its 25th anniversary tasting on August 16, 2015 at The Palace Hotel in San Francisco. The Palace was the site of our original tasting in 1991. The Sunday tasting is a one day event of award-winning small, family-owned wineries from across California. Great Wine -- A Family Tradition.

Premiere Napa Valley Auction Raises $5.9 Million

Five Cases (60 bottles) Peter Paul Cabernet Sauvignon Mt Veeder Nets $14K! (That’s $300/bottle!)

In February, Napa Valley’s annual trade auction, Premiere Napa Valley, demonstrated just how highly the wine world values Napa Valley wine—especially its’ Cabernet Sauvignon. The record-high bidding surprised just about everyone, who had to admit that the market for fine wine from Napa Valley is stronger than ever.

Each year at Premiere Napa Valley, a few select wineries can claim the dubious distinction of being chosen among the last auction lots of the day. This year, the honor fell to us. Lot 224 was second to last. But that didn’t curb the enthusiasm of numerous bidders who waited nearly 5 hours to bid on our unique lot from the extraordinary 2012 vintage.

We took the best of our best Napa Valley Cabernet and dubbed it, “Mountaintop Secret Sauce.” The high-intensity selection was culled from our premier Cabernet source: Leslie Rudd’s Mt Veeder Vineyard, perched 1500 feet above the Napa Valley floor.

The wine is 100 percent Cabernet Sauvignon, picked at full maturity from low-yielding mountain fruit grown on a 1-acre block of the vineyard. We think it might be the best Cabernet we’ve made to date.

The secret’s in the sauce.

Before pressing the wine off the skins, post fermentation, we let the last of the free-run wine ooze out of the tank overnight. Normally, we collect this highly concentrated “secret sauce” and blend it into our best lots for added intensity. This year, for the first time ever, we saved enough secret sauce to make a unique Premiere lot.

The winning bidder was Cristina Pearce, wine director for national retailer Total Wine. This was the second year in a row that Cristina has won our Napa Premiere lot. We thank her and her colleagues for their enthusiasm and support!
