About The Wines
About Peter Paul the Man
It’s a common tale for how many of us get into wine business… our parents! When Peter was just a teenager in the early 1960s, his father purchased a case of Chateau d’Yquem on sale at $10 a bottle and he became hooked on wine before being old enough to buy it. Meanwhile a job in the financial services industry brought him to Southern California in 1975. Two years later, Peter “escaped” to northern California where wine country beckoned as it always does; Peter regularly visited his father during the weekends, who was by then living in Napa Valley. Back in the “real world” Peter founded Headlands Mortgage in 1986 which became one of the premier wholesale lending institutions in the country. After leading Headlands through a successful IPO in February 1998, Peter negotiated its merger with GreenPoint Financial in 1999 and became President and CEO of GreenPoint Mortgage.
Today, Peter is the CEO of Headlands Asset Management LLC, an investment management company he founded in 2008 and Chairman of The Headlands Foundation, a non-profit organization. In addition, he is the owner of West Biofuels, a research and development venture, and for five years was majority owner of Global Wine Company, an award-winning luxury wine club management company responsible for The New York Times Wine Club, Williams-Sonoma Wine, and Food & Wine Magazine Wine Club until the business was sold in 2016. Most recently, Peter made a significant donation to his alma mater, the University of New Hampshire, to build the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics, which opened its doors in January 2013.
For Peter, becoming a vintner was clearly something that was going to happen sooner or later. In 2001, the first vintage of Peter Paul Wines was bottled. Over a decade and numerous critical scores and awards later, Peter Paul Wines is a well-respected yet small virtual California winery, mostly represented in boutique retailers and restaurants throughout just five states. With barely 2,000 cases produced annually, Peter Paul sources grapes from select vineyards in both Napa and Sonoma counties.
About Peter Paul the Wines
At Peter Paul, we harvest 100% varieties of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir from the Pacific-cooled Russian River Valley and Cabernet Sauvignon from the magnificent Napa Valley. Our vineyard sources are small plots (one is <1 acre!) owned by long-time friends of co-winemakers Daniel Moore (Martinelli & Lynmar founding winemaker) and Jeff Morgan (of Covenant wines). All Peter Paul Wines see native yeast fermentations and no filtration. Chardonnay is barrel fermented and aged, Pinot Noir sees gentle punch-downs in open-top fermenters, Cabernet is gently pumped over to avoid aggressive tannins. We aim for elegant yet emphatically New World styles of top quality wines at reasonable prices. Annual production is approximately 1,500 cases.
